A metropolitan member of the scientific elite visits an old friend and colleague who has retreated with his wife to a remote meteorological station.

Pierwszy fabularny film Krzysztofa Zanussiego. Refleksyjny dyskurs moralny o wyborze postaw zyciowych, ukazany poprzez konfrontacje dwoch naukowcow, dawnych kolegow z uczelni. Odmienne losy bohaterow filmu, z ktorych jeden robi blyskotliwa kariere naukowa, drugi natomiast decyduje sie na mniej efektowna prace na prowincji - egzemplifikuje konflikt miedzy racjonalnie pragmatycznym a humanistycznym modelem zycia.
