Item Description

In this comedy set in German-occupied Poland during World War II, Elzbieta Czyzewska plays Maria, a fearless Polish girl who unwillingly brings an Italian soldier and deserter of the Eastern front into her Warsaw apartment. The “guest’ becomes trouble for Maria, as she is involved in a conspiracy and lives with her brother, an artist (played by Zbigniew Cybulski). Circumstance involves the Italian with the Polish underground, and of course he falls in love with the beautiful Maria.

Okres drugiej wojny swiatowej. Giuseppe Santucci jedzie z frontu na urlop. Na terenie Polski wojskowy pociag zostaje zatrzymany przez partyzantow. Przerazony Giuseppe ucieka. Postanawia dotrzec do Warszawy i tam szukac towarzyszy broni. W czasie jazdy koleja ktos kradnie mu pistolet maszynowy. Santucci podejrzewa o kradziez poznana wlasnie dziewczyne. W Warszawie idzie za Maria wprost do jej mieszkania. Postanawia pozostac w nim do chwili odzyskania automatu. Marysia czynnie dziala w konspiracji, a jej brat Staszek jest temu przeciwny. Oboje, zdesperowani, godza sie na obecnosc Wlocha. Staszek zarabia na zycie malowaniem kiczowatych obrazkow, a Marysia chodzi po miescie i wrzuca do niemieckich sklepow i lokali jajka-wydmuszki napelnione cuchnaca mazia. Ktorejs nocy wyglodnialy Giuseppe znajduje w kuchni takie jajko i obryzguje jego zawartoscia jedyne spodnie Staszka. Staszek w mundurze Giuseppe idzie na bazar, by sprzedac obrazki. Upija sie i z powodzeniem udaje Wlocha przed patrolem niemieckiej zandarmerii. Gdy wraca do domu, trafia na libacje z udzialem Giuseppe i jednego z dowodcow AK. Dzialacze podziemia uznaja, ze sytuacja stala sie niebezpieczna i Marysia musi natychmiast przerwac konspiracyjna dzialalnosc. Tymczasem Santucci chcac zdobyc sympatie dziewczyny kradnie bron niemieckim oficerom. Jego postawa budzi uznanie polskich konspiratorow, ktorzy powierzaja mu zajecia w tajnej podchorazowce. Staszek znow w mundurze Giuseppe udaje sie do miasta. Zostaje aresztowany za brak pistoletu. Poznaje niemieckiego straznika handlujacego bronia. Razem opuszczaja wiezienie. Staszek pomaga mu rozbrajac Niemcow. Zandarmeria trafia na ich trop. W ostatniej chwili Giuseppe, Maria i Staszek uciekaja do partyzanckiego oddzialu. Richard Brzostek - 04/07/2008 5 of 5 Stars!
"Giuseppe in Warsaw" is a very funny comedy set during the Second World War. From its opening scene to its end, it sparks interest with its presentation, story, and music. It is filmed in black and white, which ads an element that helps brings the viewer back in time. Giuseppe (Antonio Cifariello) is an Italian returning from the Russian front. He gets separated from his fellow soldiers when his train is attacked and finds himself in Poland. There are many funny parts in the film because of the language issues Giuseppe has. His allies speak German while the local people speak Polish, and his native language is Italian (all three are actually spoken in the movie). Giuseppe meets Maria (Elzbieta Czyzewska), a pretty blond woman, in Warsaw when they help each other out of a jam. Maria has trouble getting rid of Giuseppe after their encounter and he follows her to her home. Maria happens to be a resistance fighter that does all she can to help fight the Nazis. She shares her apartment with her brother Staszek (Zbigniew Cybulski), who aspires to be an artist and have nothing to do with the war. The interplay between the three is quite funny. Although the "Giuseppe in Warsaw" is about a dismal time period, it is respectful of the seriousness of the war, yet manages to be very funny without being goofy or silly. The film is excellent at balancing chilling scenes of Nazi occupied Poland with great situational humor. "Giuseppe in Warsaw" is a great comedy and has humor that stands the test of time.
