Richard Brzostek - 04/07/2008 "Laweczka" (The Bench) is an interesting romance film. By no means is the story a fairly-tale or happily-ever-after type of movie. The story revolves around a woman named Kasia (Jolanta Fraszynska) who hopes to find a decent man to settle down with. Her life becomes complicated when she recognizes someone whom she thinks she knows. The man introduces himself as Mikolaj (Artur Zmijewski). To her disappointment, he is a womanizer and interested only in going back to her place for the night.
Their relationship builds on the tour boat Kasia works on. Mikolaj continuously tries to impress her, as well as other women. Kasia struggles with herself when she discovers that the man doesn't bring all that she wants in a relationship. But his charm and good looks slowly break down some of her inhibition. Mikolaj is a gigolo who is as persistent with his advances as Kasia is with pushing him away. Despite his shortcomings she always leaves some encouragement for him while they play a game of "cat and mouse." The way they interact is captivating and there is quite a bit of chemistry between them. "Laweczka" fits the bill of a love story that isn't covered with frosting. |
